A Day in the Life of a Photographer During the Slow Season
(Spoiler: It’s Not Just Netflix!)
Ah, the slow season — when the cameras are quieter, the inbox is a little less chaotic, and you’d think I’m just lounging around in sweatpants binge-watching Netflix, right? Well… you wouldn’t be entirely wrong. But there’s a whole lot more going on behind the scenes that keeps this business running even when the bookings slow down.
☕ Morning Hustle (and Coffee — Always Coffee)
My day usually starts with coffee — and not just any coffee. We’re talking a well-earned, caffeine-packed hug in a mug. While sipping that magical elixir, I’m usually tackling my inbox, responding to inquiries, and following up on client galleries.
📸 Admin Work and Organization (The Glamorous Stuff)
Slow season means catching up on all the things that get pushed to the side when I’m deep in back-to-back sessions.
This includes:
✔️ Updating my website and portfolio
✔️ Writing blog posts (like this one!) for that SEO boost
✔️ Planning upcoming promotions and limited edition sessions
✔️ Updating my client guides and pricing sheets
🖼️ Creative Time (aka Why I Love This Job)
Slow season is also my chance to get creative without the pressure of deadlines. I’ll brainstorm new session themes, test out new backdrops, and even play around with some personal projects. Plus, it’s prime time to revamp those cake smash setups (because let’s face it — cake smashes are my jam).
🍰 Marketing and Social Media (Keeping the Vibes Alive)
Just because I’m not shooting doesn’t mean I’m not working. I’ll draft social media posts, create Reels, and engage with my audience to keep that algorithm happy. (Yes, Instagram is basically a part-time job at this point.) If you ever see me post something please give it a like. You guys have NO IDEA how much it helps us. We work hard on our content and it's so frustrating sometimes when we think no one sees them.
🏋️♀️ Personal Time (Because Work-Life Balance Matters)
I’m also using this season to focus on me. That means sticking to my strength training sessions, getting in some long walks, and trying not to survive on coffee alone (key word: trying).
🕯️ Working on New Products (Because Why Not?)
I’ve been working on launching some side hustle products — from photography-related templates to candles. (Because you can never have too many candles.)
🍷 Evening Wind-Down (Yes, There’s Netflix)
After a day of organizing, editing, and creating, you better believe I’m curling up with a true crime doc. (Because nothing says "relaxation" like unsolved mysteries.)
💡 Slow Season Isn’t Lazy Season
So, while I might not be out there chasing golden hour every day, slow season is anything but boring. Once the weather starts getting nice, everything resets and time to tackle it all. So in the meantime this is my time to reset, refresh, and get everything in place for the busy season ahead. Plus, a little Netflix never hurt anyone. 😉
